    Executive Summary

Mumbai is India's commercial capital — but its business websites tell a different story. After auditing 127 websites across doctors, finance firms, lawyers, real estate agencies, restaurants, consultants, and startups in Mumbai's major suburbs, the data reveals a significant digital performance gap that is actively costing local businesses customers.

    • Average mobile PageSpeed score: 54/100 (Google's "Good" threshold is 90+)
    • 37% of Mumbai business websites score below 50 on mobile — Google's "Poor" category
    • Only 7% score 90 or above on mobile — the level needed to rank competitively
    • 36% have zero Schema markup — making them structurally invisible to AI tools
    • Lawyers have the worst Schema adoption: 53% have none at all
    • Real estate is the worst-performing industry on mobile: average 49/100

Why This Matters for Mumbai Businesses

Google's ranking algorithm directly uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. A website that scores below 50 on mobile PageSpeed is likely:

    • Ranking lower than competitors with faster sites, even if your content and services are better
    • Losing 53% of mobile visitors who abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load (Google Research, 2023)
    • Invisible to AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity when someone asks "best doctor in Mulund" or "top CA firm in Thane"
    • Missing out on Google's rich results — FAQ snippets, star ratings, business hours directly in search

With 77% of Mumbai's internet usage happening on mobile devices (TRAI 2025), a 54/100 average mobile score is not a minor technical issue — it is a lead generation crisis across an entire city's business ecosystem.

    Methodology

We audited 127 business websites in August 2026. Sites were identified by searching Google Maps for businesses in Mulund, Thane, Bandra, Andheri, Powai, Ghatkopar, and Dadar across 7 industry categories. We included only websites actively maintained within the last 2 years.

    Each site was tested using:

    • Google PageSpeed Insights API v5 — Lighthouse mobile and desktop simulation (throttled Moto G Power, 4G connection)
    • Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) — real-world INP data where available
    • HTML source analysis — platform detection (WordPress, Shopify, Next.js, Webflow, GoDaddy, custom), SSL status, JSON-LD Schema markup, and mobile viewport tag
All audits used Google's standard throttled mobile simulation representing a typical Mumbai user on a mid-range Android device on 4G — the most common browsing scenario across the city.

    Performance by Industry

Real estate firms score worst on mobile with an average of 49/100, while consultants lead at 59/100. Across every industry, the gap between mobile and desktop scores is stark — pointing to sites built for desktop that were never properly optimised for the device most Mumbai customers actually use.

Industry Sites Audited Avg Mobile Score % With No Schema Top Platform

    Doctors & Clinics2053/10015%WordPress

    Finance & CA Firms1957/10042%Custom
    Startups1958/10047%Custom
    Consultants1559/10033%Custom

Key finding: Lawyers have the worst Schema markup adoption at 53% — more than half of Mumbai law firms are completely invisible to AI tools that could be recommending them to potential clients. Doctors have the best adoption at 85%, likely because medical directories auto-generate basic Schema for listed practices.

Platform Breakdown: What Are Mumbai Businesses Using?

WordPress dominates at 43% of all sites audited. Shopify scores worst on mobile at 45/100 despite being a modern hosted platform — heavy theme JavaScript and third-party app scripts are the likely cause.

Platform Sites % of Sample Avg Mobile Score
    WordPress5443%53/100
    Custom / Unknown5342%58/100
    Next.js76%55/100
    Shopify76%45/100
    GoDaddy43%50/100
    Webflow11%62/100

The platform surprise: Custom-built sites score only marginally better than WordPress (58 vs 53). Poor performance is a discipline problem, not a platform problem. A well-optimised WordPress site can outperform a poorly-built custom React app.

The Schema Markup Crisis: 36% of Mumbai Businesses Are AI-Invisible

Schema markup (JSON-LD structured data) tells Google and AI tools exactly what your business is, where it operates, and what services it offers. Without it:

    • Google cannot generate rich results — no FAQ snippets, no star ratings, no business hours in search
    • AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity cannot accurately cite your business in recommendations
    • Your Google Business Profile data cannot reinforce your website's local SEO signals

Our audit found 46 out of 127 Mumbai business websites — 36% — have zero Schema markup. For a law firm, adding LegalService Schema takes 30 minutes and could be the difference between being recommended or ignored when someone asks Gemini: "find me a property lawyer in Bandra."

The One Bright Spot: SSL Is Universal

Every single website in our sample runs on HTTPS — a 100% SSL adoption rate. This is the correct baseline. If your site is still on HTTP in 2026, Chrome marks it "Not Secure" and Google penalises it in rankings. The Mumbai business community has correctly addressed this.

5 Things Every Mumbai Business Can Fix Today (Free)

    1. Add LocalBusiness Schema markup. 36% of sites are missing this entirely. A JSON-LD block with your name, address, phone, hours, and service area takes 30 minutes and makes you AI-citable immediately.
    2. Compress your images. The biggest cause of low mobile scores across all 127 sites was oversized images. Convert to WebP, compress under 100KB. Use Squoosh.app — free.
    3. Audit your WordPress plugins. 43% of Mumbai sites run WordPress. Every active plugin adds page-blocking JavaScript. Check PageSpeed Insights → "Remove unused JavaScript" and deactivate what you don't actively need.
    4. Check your mobile viewport tag. Without <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">, your site renders as a desktop page on phones. A 5-minute fix.
    5. Run your own audit right now. Go to pagespeed.web.dev, enter your URL, run the Mobile test. Below 50 means you are losing customers to faster competitors every day.
